Traffic and parking restrictions between 14 - 22 December

Smithfield Market is very busy during the week leading up to Christmas which causes serious congestion.

Special parking and travel arrangements will be in place between 9pm to midday on

Thursday and Friday 14-15 December
Sunday and Monday 17-18 December
Monday and Tuesday 18-19 December
Tuesday and Wednesday 19-20 December
Wednesday and Thursday 20-21 December
Thursday and Friday 21-22 December

Plan ahead to ensure your visit runs smoothly.

There will be a combination of temporary road closures, vehicle restrictions, parking bay suspensions and changes in directional flow of traffic.

  • Cars will need to access the Market via Long Lane and park in the car park
  • HGVs will need to enter the Market via West Smithfield as there will be no access via Long Lane
  • HGVs, LGVs and Taxis only will be allowed to access East Poultry Avenue
  • HGVs will not be able exit the area via Charterhouse Street at its junction with Farringdon Street

Traffic management and advice to drivers

Traffic stewards, the Market Constabulary and City of London Police will manage the traffic restrictions and provide advice to drivers. Please follow the instructions you are given to help keep the traffic moving during peak times to reduce queuing and inconvenience to everyone.


On street parking will not be available in the vicinity of the Market.

Smithfield car park is open 24 hours. Free parking will be available between 9pm - 10am the following day from Thursday 14 - Friday 22 December. Allow more time for your journey as at peak times as you may need to queue. Find other car parks in the City.

Parking bay restrictions

All the parking bays around the Market will be suspended to ensure that traffic flows are maintained. Parking suspensions will be rigorously enforced and if you park in a suspended bay you risk receiving a parking ticket.

London Lorry Control Scheme

The excluded route networks for the London Lorry Control Scheme, which are the roads HGVs can use without permission include the A501 and A1 (until the junction with A501). If travelling south please use either the A1 (although access for HGVs to the Market is restricted) or the A201. For late deliveries please contact the Market on 020 7332 3092.

Driving in the area but not visiting the Market

Vehicle access to the Market on the key dates will be restricted to those on Market business only during peak times of 9pm and midday. If you are not visiting the Market follow the diversion or seek alternative routes to avoid Market area. Use
